Question:

2 iron Who can hit it?

Lee Travino once said "not even God can hit a 2 iron." There is no doubt in my mind that God could rip one 320 yards down the middle but i fell into this category of not choosing this club on the course because it was not reliable for me and my game. Now here is the reason for the post: I work at a natural gas plant with plenty of time on my hands and plenty of open field. It is so loud here that it is required to wear ear plugs, 7 Cooper Bessemer compressors each the size of a Peterbuilt tractor and trailor, and often pressures releasing that would drown out a jet engine. I tee up and can rip 2 iron after 2 iron down the middle every time with Tiger form: stinger, draw, and fade with excellent control. What the h**l is going on? When I set foot on the course its like the club is cursed. Please tell me your thoughts. JP

  1. Your mental game is as messed up as mine when you step on the course.  Play like your practicing and you'll have no worries. Good luck!

  2. As stated earlier Trevino's quote was in reference to a one iron.  The full quote was If you're ever caught on the golf course during a lighting storm hold a one iron over your head because even god can't hit a one iron.

  3. I can hit a two iron, but to correct your statement... Lee Trevino said "even God can't hit a 1 iron".  In addition, he said "never bet with a guy who's got a 1 iron in the bag".  And to answer your question, nearly everyone is a pro on the range, but that is because you are aming for AREAS where as on the course you alter your focus to specific targets.  For example, next time you hit it, say to yourself "okay, just like practice... nice, smooth, solid, a little high cut between the left bunker and the fairway right."  Giving yourself an area vs a spot (the SMALL fairway) will free your mind and give you more confidence.

  4. never had the oppurtunity to use one

  5. I can hit a two iron, it hurts but i can hit it, I can hit a golf ball with it too, but i doesn't go very far...

  6. I do a lot of work in and around Prestonsburg, KY, but I seem to never have enough time in the day to play golf there, as I'm usually lucky to finish work by 5 or 6pm.  I don't have an answer for you, since I don't even use a 2 iron.  I use a 3 iron is as low as I get and I can usually hit it around 200 yrds.  If I need more than that, then it's time for the 3, 5 or 7 wood.  Anyway, good luck.

  7. The 2 iron is my favorite club in the bag.  It's this ugly big bertha thing I've had for years.  I can carry it 235 off hardpan, but I use it mostly as a reliable driving club on tighter holes.  As far as your question, when you openly acknowledge you can hit the thing on the course, what chance do you think you have?!  You need to make your practice sessions as much like playing as possible.  Have a specific target and go through your routine on each shot while practicing.

  8. Well when it comes to my golf game, i am really superstitious, so i would say next time you go golfing, plug you earplugs in your ears when you want to hit your 2 iron, it may work.  When i hit mine, i use it for a bump and run (i use bump and run from 100+ out).

P.S. It's "Not even god can hit a 1 iron."  And i play with a guy who can hit a 1 iron 150-175.

  9. My guess is that you are letting your head interfere with your game......I have both a 1 iron and a 2 Iron.  Seldom put the 1 in the bag any more but it depends on the playing conditions and course as to if I use a 2 Iron or a 5 wd.  You may be trying to force the 2 Iron...just let it flow naturally.  btw  175 with a 1 iron....not so good....  lol
