Heya,

I'm getting all my gear together to buy a python (or two) in Nov, I have a lg, 4ft long aquarium which will be its/their new home.

I'm a first timer and was wondering if juvenile (or, even adult) snakes can coexist in the same habitat? If so, what types and would they be female only?

Also, I've fallen in love with the pattern and colour of the Ball Python and wonder if they're available in Australia

Thnx~Emily

  1. its not a good idea to house snakes together...one could end up eating the other one...its something that i have done and continue to do but i know the risk that i am taking with it.

  2. Don't house any snakes together except when you are breeding them. They become very stressed out and it's not unheard of to find out one of them has taken up the past time of cannibalism and eaten it's cage mate.

  3. Australia only allows native animals, so you can't own a ball python. And all snakes are solitary and should always be housed alone. I have 160 snakes currently and all are housed by themselves.

  4. No ball pythons allowed in Australia I'm afraid. I think they are gorgeous too! But we have loads of beautiful native reptiles which you can keep. Check out your state's wildlife service and in the licensing section they will have a list of allowed species.

I would recommend a Bredl's python (Centralian Carpet) which has beautiful red, cream and black markings and grown to be about 2.5m long. Or maybe a Diamond python (you know what they say about Diamonds being a girls best friend!)

Co-habitation is a really bad idea as mentioned above. The biggest danger is cannibalism. They should only be put together when you are mating them and that requires an experienced keeper.

First apply for your licence (can take a few weeks depending on which state) then start checking out your local herpetelogical society who can put you in touch with some local breeders.

Good luck, I started keeping snakes about a year ago and I am hooked!
