Question:

2 male rats?

I bought one male rat yesterday and will buy another tomorrow. If they have been quarantined in the pet store in separate cages (as Petsmart does) do I need to quarantine them myself? Should I still get them neutered for the health benefits even though I don't have to worried about unwanted pregnancy? Lastly, is the Super Pet Deluxe Cage for Critters, 24.5"x12.5"x24.5", big enough for two rats?

  2. I don't know the official word on male rats, but I had two male rats and they hated each other...fought constantly. Sorry. maybe it was just my two rats.

  3. were the boys in the same cage at the store or the same one? if the same one they might get along better. i had 2 males fight, but one was also a breeding male before he met the second boy. i also had a roommate take a male baby and it got along really well with her male she already had. temperament plays a part too. i've heard both though, with fighting and being friendly with each other. so keep them separate maybe the first night and introduce the next on neutral territory before putting one in the others cage

i'm unsure about getting them fixed. it's risky enough to put a rat under, let alone try to find a vet who's had experience with it. if they don't fight, then i wouldn't bother. if they do fight, then consider it and look around for a well practiced vet.

good luck with your boys =)

  4. I got two male rats, but they were brothers and got along.  One of them died last week, though, and now the other one is really lonely.  Anyway, what I would do is just introduce them more and more and more everyday. Soon they will probably learn to like each other.

I would DEFINITELY get them neutered!  If you don't, they will fight because they will think they need to protect their 'territory'!  Also they will pee and poo all over the place when you take them out.

I would get the 'Super Pet My First Home 2' X 2' Ferret Cage 3 Level' because, even thought it's for ferrets, it would be good for rats and the other one has a wheel, which which could hurt their spines.

  5. two male rats in a cage together may fight over territory! so its best maby to seperate them in different cages and slowly give them time together building up the time  so eventually they will be able to go in one cage. rats love egg and avocordo just if you wanted to make them extra happy. oh and dont get them fixed, its not worth it!

  6. Put them in seperate cages close to one another to begin and then slowly introduce them to one another and seperate if they fight again. Keep going through the process. If they are like my son's male hamsters they will eventually come to terms. One may always be more aggressive, but unless he beats the other one, they should be ok with one another in time.

  7. "Quarantine" as performed by the pet shop isn't quarantine at all: the animals are still in the same airspace, and therefore anything one animal has will reach the others in short order. So yes, you DO need to quarantine http://ratguide.com/health/basics/quaran... them yourself, unless you want both rats possibly dying of Sendai http://ratguide.com/health/viruses/senda... or SDA http://ratguide.com/health/viruses/sda.p... both of which eat pet shop "quarantine" for breakfast.

According to this cage calculator, http://www.ratzrus.co.uk/ratguides/rat-c... the cage you mentioned is only big enough for one rat. Keep in mind, a cage without shelves is only half as big as it looks: the rats can't access the "empty air" above the base and away from the sides, and therefore only have about half the cage at their disposal. Male rats also prefer to be less active, so they need a lot of floor space (whereas females like to climb and need a tall cage). Better to get a cage that's big enough for four or five rats, in case your boys start squabbling: that will allow them to break it up and go "sulk" in their own corner instead of being confined to the same small-ish area.

  8. I have 3 rats that were all bought at different times and at different places. Two of mine did not get along well at all but are now best friends. I slowly introduced them in a neutral area (the bathtub) and had them neutered.

When I got the first one I took him to the pet store to pick out his buddy (I used one of the petting rooms to introduce several rats, one at a time, to my current rat.)
