Question:

2 month old, and crib bumpers?

I asked this question before but now there is more to the story lol;

My daughter is 2 months old, and she moves a lot in her crib. I have to put her at the front of the crib and when I wake up she is always at the bottom. I dunno how she does it lol!

My mom has been worried that she will get hurt, by her feet getting caught between the bars. And sometimes I have noticed her knees bent, if they were straight her legs would be through the bars.

My mom took my daughter to the doctors yesterday and the doctor suggested putting a crib bumper on the crib.

I am still worried about the sids risk, but my doctor told my mom that he is more worried about her legs getting caught in the bars. So I am stuck, what would you do?

If you suggest getting the mesh bumpers, how expensive are they? I have a bumper but it isnt meshed.

I also have a glow worm in the crib with her, on the side where she cant reach it, it plays music and lights up. It usually helps her go to sleep, should I take that out?

Thanks for your help!

  1. I wouldn't worry about her legs sticking through the crib. My son is 8 months now and is all over the place. If he does poke through the bars and can't get out he cries and I save him. No injuries though. If your really concerned I would get a mesh crib guard. My ped. says nothing in the crib. I had a bumper in there until he could roll over then took it out so he didn't get wedged and suffocate. You shouldn't even put toys in there. I have a crib toy that has lights and music and motion and had a mobile but had to take that out once he could reach it. I wouldn't bother with the bumper because once your baby can stand up it needs to go.

  2. My son is 4months...I have crib bumpers and until I see any reason to take them off they are staying on there for the same reason as you listed above..I don't want him getting stuck or hitting his head on the crib slats...you just have to out weight the odds of everything, some people just panick...just my opinion. Others I'm sure will insist you never ever put bumper pads on a crib!! Well then why do they make them with EVERY bedding set?

  3. Please stop worrying so much about SIDS!  The chances of your daughter dying from it are extremely small and are much more related to genetic factors than crib bumper pads.  Do you have SIDS deaths in your family?  No?  Good!   Can your daughter hold her head up yet?  Yes?  Great!

    If you've invested a lot of money in a "crib bedding set" (which usually comes with a really fancy bumper pad), just go ahead and use that or if you're still not comfortable, just buy a simple pad that is lightweight (just in case your baby has some strange ability to shove her face into it and keep it there  - which is what it would take to suffocate on it!) and meets the purpose that Grandma is worried about.  I'm assuming she put a bumper pad in your crib and you're still here, right?

    Your precious daughter sounds very active and physically strong (very cool!)  Chances are she could get her legs or arms through the bars and maybe not hurt herself, but get stuck which would frustrate the heck out of her.

    I'm sorry to sound so callous about your fears regarding SIDS but I am so sick of the "authorities" telling MOTHERS how to take care of their babies, when so much of it involves FEAR and SCARE TACTICS.  My other peeve is the concept of keeping an active baby straitjacketed into a carseat for the entire duration of a car trip - provided, of course, there is someone other than the driver in the car to hold him!

  4. I had a bumper in the crib with my daughter since she was 2 months. She is now 13 months and doing great. I also have a glow worm in the crib with her that she got for christmas along with some books she likes to look at when she wakes up. I would definitely recommend the mesh ones if you are really worried about sids. My daughter didn't move as much as yours does so I really wasn't worried about it. She did move from one side of the crib to the other but she was never near the edge. When my second daughter is old enough to go in her crib (3 weeks old now) I will transfer the bumper from my other daughters crib to hers. Good luck and Congratulations on your baby girl.

  5. We never used crib bumpers. and yes they their legs do come out of the bars, but they seem aware of it. They pull their own legs and arms in on their own terms. We've had no problems.

  6. They have breathable bumpers at Babies R Us for around $30.
