2 out of 2 for Francesco Chicchi at the Tour De San Luis 2012
It was another terrific day for Omega Pharma-Quick Step squad, where two of its cyclists topped the podium during the stage 2 of the Tour De San Luis 2012.
Francesco Chicchi had a terrific start to the Argentinean race, securing the first two stages of the event.
He won the first stage of the race after a close encounter with Juan Jose Haedo of Team Saxo Bank.
A second consecutive photo finish for the Italian but this time he was competing against his own teammate, Tom Boonen.
The Belgian squad could not have planned a better finish with both its leading cyclists finishing at the top.
It was a battle between Tom Boonen and Francesco Chicchi, as the duo dominated the race on Wednesday, January 25, 2012.
He thanked the whole Omega Pharma squad for its support and believes that he is lucky to be in Patrick Lefevere’s team for the season ahead.
The Italian joined the team in 2011 after spending four years with Liquigas, from January 2007-2010, and is now looking ahead for a promising 2012 season with the side.
He cited, "It's the first time I win two stages in a row during the same race, its great feeling, winter training and the serene atmosphere in the team are bringing in great results”.
“Let me thank my team once again. The guys raced a team time trial again today and they took Tom and I by the hand up until the very last kilometre," Francesco continued.
The 31-year-old is now leading the final general classifications after the second stage of the Tour De San Luis.
Juan Jose Haedo of Team Saxo Bank is 14 seconds behind at the second position, with Jake Keough of Team UnitedHealthcare further 2 seconds adrift at the third spot.
Tom Boonen claimed the second podium position for the Belgian team. He briefed, "It was pretty amazing. We both put our hands up, none of us jumped, and it was nice".
Francesco is now amongst the favourites to win the overall classifications. He needs to keep a close eye on the Argentinean cyclist, Juan, who will take full advantage of the home turf to close in the deficit of 4 seconds.
