2 questions about downloading online videos?

Question

1) i know about the keepvid thing, but like when download like say a youtube video on a mp4 file...for some reason my computer can't read it (i use windows vista)...do i need like a file converter so i can watch the mp4 file? and if so what software is free?

2) keepvid can download youtube videos, but does anyone know something that can download videos from a lot more sites (like redtube videos...) it doesn't work on keepvid
