Is it common at this time of year for the fish to go and stay at the bottom of the pond and not go to the surface? Also I have a small pond which is raised up in a old barrel it is quite deep and three feet wide, why do the fish occasionally jump out of the water, they land on the patio and that's the end for them, what causes them to do it. Im not bad to live with that they want to commit suicide, Ive heard that one before, this is a serious question. LOL

  1. in colder weather it is totally normal for the fish to stay at the bottom as the water is slightly warmer there its kinda like hybernation their whole metabolism slows down secondly theres no single reason as to why they jump it could be flicking caused by mites on the fish it could be spawning or their may be a lack of oxygen in the water.  also im not understhanding what your pond is like? when you say raised it it very big also does it go below ground surface because it is not good if the cold air can get to all sides of the pond due to freezin you will end up with fish cubes?

  2. yes but they ARE SCARED MINE ARE AT THE BOTTOM TO JUST BUY FLOATING FOOD IT WILL BE OK

  3. "This time of year"...well if you're in australia it is the end of winter, and if you are in the us it is the end of summer....so I dunno what season YOU are in...lol

In any season they may stay at the bottom....maybe it's too bright for them, so they stay at the bottom, or maybe they are too cold so they just aren't that active. Maybe they are sick too though, or maybe the water has too much ammonia in it. If they are sick, this stuff called Coppersafe made by Mardel is good to use. If you don't have a filter, maybe changing some of the water will help. I keep mine in a tank, so I am not as familar as what to do for pond fish. I just know whenever my fish act funny, I change water and add coppersafe, and it always helps. I lost my first fish this morning in over a year, and it is because I am moving, and the stress of putting them into the travel container was just too much for 1 of them :(

Ok, about that barrel....go to home depot or something and get that stuff that goes on screen doors...the black mesh stuff and make a lid since you KNOW your fish jump out..ok? There's other stuff you can get too...just get something so they don't jump out. OR, don't fill the barrel as full. Fish jump...that's just what the do.
