  1. yes u can have 2 routers in one house no problem

  2. Yes, you can have 2 or more routers in one house. Be sure to set its SSID (network name) to something different than the other router you have.

  3. Your suggestion is not what will fix this.  Based on your description, the likely setup is that the parents have a wireless router downstairs, which is hardwired to the internet connection (cable or DSL).  This router has a wireless feature, which allows you to have internet connectivity in your room.  Unless you have access to the outside connection (e.g. cable or DSL) in your room, then putting a router in your room will not get you connected.  What you need to do is fix the one downstairs. It might not be broken - but just not configured correctly.  It helps if you give make / model etc... with this.  When you are upstaris, can you see the wireless signal from the router, or is there nothing?  You may see the access point but not be able to connect, if the security & access / operating mode is not set correctly.  Post more details & I'll help you diagnose what's wrong.  Also if it's a linksys router, you can call their support number for free (or better yet, open a chat with a technician)

  4. yes you can

i agree with the other person you might want to change the network name ( ssid)

More important is to change the channel

Otherwise the network card will be bouncing between the two - slow or no reception

You would think that having the same ssid on different channels would cause problems in reception - it usually does not

the card seems to lock in on the stronger signal

Its only if you put them identical channels and ssids that it causes problems

make sure the routers are high and not cluttered

best channel not to have is the default ( like your neighbors)

channels 1 and 11 are best picks

  5. If I understand the problem, you are getting a weak signal from the wireless router in the basement.  That's totally normal, wireless signals don't propagate very well between floors.

The best option for you might be to try and boost the signal using one of the many methods and/or devices listed here:

But if you can convince them to move the router to the middle floor, that would help a lot.
