  1. Any bike you get should have regular maintenance to keep it running and if you got a basic 4 stroke 250 like the xr then the maintenance is not as much, but the high perfomance 4 strokes like the crf250r require more maintenance.

The 2 strokes do have to have the top end done a lot but it is cheaper to do them than the 4 stroke.

The 2 strokes are slowly being phazed out and most of the major manufacturers dont make them anymore.  The last honda 125cc 2 stroke was made last year and at this stage they are still being raced but will soon become obsolete so resale value would be better for you with a good 4 stroke.

On a race bike if you want to keep your compression up the rings should be done every 10 hours and the piston every 20 hours on the 2 stroke and on the racing 4 stroke depending on make varies 11 between and 15 hours.  This is how our bikes are done and on advice from the top mechanic in the country.  You wouldnt need to do this if you are not racing but it should all still be done regularly.

  2. Oh no you dont have to replace the top end that much at all.

every once in a great while....

but the new racing bikes are 2 strokes if you want to get into racing.

    I would reconmend a 2 stroke.

  3. The difference between two-stroke and four-stoke engines is the amount of power the engine can produce. The spark plug fires twice as often in a two-stroke engine once per every revolution of the crankshaft, versus once for every two revolutions in a four-stroke engine. This means that a two-stroke engine has the potential to produce twice as much power as a four-stroke engine of the same size. This might help you make the right decision. Two-stroke engines are much less complicated and therefore easier to work on.

  4. So here's the deal in a nutshell. If you ride the bike hard, yes you will have to do a top end job probably once a year on a 2 stroke. It has always been that way and is no big deal. On a 4 stroke you should probably do the same thing every two years. A top end on a 4 stroke is about twice the cost, but you do it half as often so it's basically a wash. If you aren't going to race, a 2 stroke will be fine. Just remember that on a 2 stroke you cannot cruise around at low RPM's without fouling a plug. That is the beauty of a 4 stroke, you can ride it as slow as you want and never have to worry about fouling a plug, the low end power is like a tractor and when you want to go fast just turn the throttle and you're off. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone other than an A class woods rider or FMX rider would even consider a 2 stroke these days.

  5. people whoo say that you have to replace yer top end on a 2stroke all the time must be dumb.

i ride the sh** out of my yz250 and put a new top end about once every two years. and my buddies with there 4strokes cant even work on those pigs, they have to send it to a shop cuz you MUST have certain tools.

and by the time a guy changes his oil on a 4 stroke you could have a new chain and sprockets put on your bike. Its up to you 4 strokes are cool and easy to ride,, but 2strokes are in my mind better and cost less. and will last longer as long as you keep the same oil premix.

  6. It depends on where you ride it! How you ride it! And how much you know about working on them. If you are thinking about a 2 stroke, then look at getting a 250 not a 125. You can have plenty of fun on the 125, but the 250 will give you enough to ride anywhere and with anyone that you want. The 250 four stroke is a good all around bike as well. Has enough power for most environments, but not to much to get you into trouble. Maintenance very much depends on the way they are ridden on either one.   I do just about every type of riding and racing and i am on my second year on the piston and rings on my 250 two stroke and 4th year on my 125 two stroke. A good oil will make things last a long time. You by cheap parts and oils and that is exactly what you get. Keeping them clean really helps everything last as well. As far as 2 stroke or 4 stroke just depends wether you want that 2 stroke hit or that 4stroke pull!
