2 switches for 1 light wiring question...?

It's been about 10 years since I've done this & I think I know how to do it but I just need to know for sure... I want to wire 2 switches to control one ceiling light. Here's my scenario: I have a double box for 1 switch and one 110V receptacle (receptacle has power), 20' away a box for the other switch and the light in the ceiling right about in the middle. Here's how I think it's done... Run 14/2 from the double box to the other box and from the double box to the light fixture. I don't think I need to use 14/3 anywhere since I have power right next to that switch in the double box. I only need 14/2 wire to run the jumpers to the other switch and power to the light, right? I hope I'm right but if I'm not, please tell me. Any people with electrical experience please advise. Thanx!!

  1. Since you will take power from the receptacle to do the light circuit, you will need 12/3 between the switches, and 12/2 to the light from the second switch.  Do not put smaller wire in the circuit unless you put a smaller breaker in the panel to feed it.

  2. For reference only now that you have it figured out, here's a good site for a variety of switch wiring:  http://www.electrical-online.com/wiringd...

  3. Yep you figured it out you will need 14/3   Good luck

  4. you got it.... I use this to help remember

    Heat from one side

    Switch from the other

So.. power in on one switch on the dark s***w

14/3 to the other switch to carry the "travelers" red/blk

on the lighter screws and the neutral to neutral

power out of other switch (dark s***w) to fixture.

If light won't switch on from one side, change red and blk wires on one switch only....

    there you go.................

  5. Your right you did figure it out. You need 14/3 to the other box for the switched to work.
