  1. Rhizopon, is a rooting  hormone you can purchase.  You might just compare rooting cuttings with and without the hormone, or compare abilities of various plant parts or species of plants to root.  Violets, philodendron, and other  house plants with nodes can be rooted successfully.  Research propagation online and you should find many ways to root or grow plants.

Gibberellin is another plant hormone you could experiment with if you can find it.

  2. There are several rooting hormones in powder and liquid forms that I've seen in stores, though not all are equally common.

    1. Most common:  Indole-3-Butyric acid

    2. 2nd most common:  Indole-3-acetic acid

    3. 3rd most common:  Naphthalene acetic acid

Rooting compounds with these ingredients can be found at nurseries, hardware stores and Walmart stores with garden departments.

Some plants are easy to root from cuttings and some are very difficult, even when using these rooting hormones.  I think woody plants are harder to root.

I have several succulents (such as Jade plants) which had leaves accidentally knocked off and I later found roots growing out of the leaves even though they were just sitting on a table top - no dirt, or water.

I've seen grocery store onions and potatoes sprouting by themselves in a closed cabinet if left there long enough before eating.
