One of my friends who has deployed before said when you get your 2 week leave they will fly you anywhere in the world. What are the details on this? can I fly home first and pick up my girlfriend then go to a different country for a vacation?? how does this work?

  1. uh no.  you will either be flown to a port of entry in the US and you have to find your own way 'home' or they will fly you to an R&R location such as Qatar or Germany..via AMC.

you don't get a free RT ticket to anywhere.

  2. The way it worked before...you get a roundtrip ticket to where you want to go.   That's it...anything else is on you.

  3. Your friend is correct. They will pay for your round trip ticket to anywhere you want to go. My husband said alot of his friends went to Germany for there leave instead of going home. As for your girlfriend she would have to buy her own ticket and meet you there. When you get over there they will ask what dates you want your leave and where you would like to go. If the dates are available then you get them.

  4. Its a single round trip.  So if you chose to fly home then you would be on your own to fly somewhere else with her.

Probably best to fly to the country you want to spend time with her in and get her a ticket to there also.

But yes its anywhere you want, I asked a friend of mine this , who was in Iraq, this same question recently.

  5. na, but she can meet you there! She better apply for a visa quick tho. you too if you havent.

  6. It's a single round trip ticket anywhere you would like. I would suggest you just go home. You have to be deployed longer than six months to be eligible, but it's no really worth doing unless you're going to be over seas for more then 8 months. Good luck.

  7. Here is how it worked when I was there, and had a friend travel to Belize.  Normally you will be shuttled to Kuwait with a bunch of other Service Members from around Iraq.  When you get to Kuwait, one by one, you will talk to SATO travel and arrange for your flight out of Atlanta, or Dallas (for in country travel).  Your round ticket will be to and from Atlanta or Dallas.  The flight to and from Kuwait will be charter.

For international travel, your unit should push your leave destination to SATO before you get there.  I believe that is only for Europe and Asia travel.  Because you will be flying out direct from Kuwait.  If you are traveling to Canada or the Caribbean, you probably still will fly through Atlanta or Dallas.

As for your girlfriend, you will need to just arrange for her to arrive at your out of country destination on/near the day your leave is approved for.  Sorry, but it will be very difficult to fly together.
