Question:

2 week old who throws up after nursing... what can i do?

I have a 2 week 4 day old baby girl. For the first 2 weeks she nursed GREAT! She latched on right away and had no problems with spitting up. Now she has a terrible time latching on, she throws her head around and screams when she cant find it. We are not doing anything differently. At least 2-3 times a day she is spitting up now. Today she spit up 4 times in a row, i didnt think her tummy could hold that much.

I burp her after each feeding and she rarely burps.

I am just scared that I am going to lay her down for bed and shes going to throw up and choke on it. I am a super paranoid first time mom.

Any advise on how I can help her? I try burping her on my chest, her sitting up and laying down.

Thanks

  1. I would take her to the pediatrician. The same thing happened to my daughter and she had acid reflux (which hurts the baby's esophogus and also makes them spit up a lot after feeding) and she had to be on medication for it until she was 4 months old.

  2. How much is she throwing up? How often, how long after feeding and is it projectile?

    Edit -

It is normal for infants to have some amount of spit up or wet burps. Some things that you can do to help is keep her up right for about 30 minutes after the feedings. Try to get her to nurse before she starts crying. When infants start to cry for food they are all ready thristy so then will be very frusterated getting them latched on. Keep an eye on what you are eating you may be eating something that is changing the smell or taste of the milk . Pay attention to the amount of diary you are consuming. How is your let down? Do you have a very strong let down?

does that sound like your situation?

  4. What are you eating? nursing moms have to watch out for their diet.

When you nurse her don't lay her completely flat..burp her during feedings..and when she is done don't lay her down completely.

Don't put baby down until you get a burp out.

  5. Sounds normal - sometimes they burp, sometimes they don't.  Sometimes they spit up, sometimes they don't.  Try keeping a log of what you are eating and how often she is throwing up/spitting up and see if you can determine if it's something you are eating that makes it worse sometimes.  She won't choke, a baby "throwing up" isn't like an adult throwing up....for one thing there is nothing solid in their tummy.

When my 4 month old is really squirming I try burping him mid feeding, and sometimes actually pat his back as he eats & that helps him.  If your daughter is getting really frantic at the beginning of the feeding, try feeding her a bit sooner (ie: if she usually eats every 3hours try feeding her at the 2.75 hour mark) - maybe she isn't giving any hunger cues until she's REALLY hungry & she just gets frustrated when her hunger isn't immediately satisfied.

Good luck & try not to stress too much!

  6. You don't need to worry too much about her choking. I know its hard not to but a healthy baby will turn their head and spit out what ever it is that they are choking on.

I didn't breastfeed my first and am with my second. Its very different. The first couple months my son did the same thing but as he got a little bit older he stopped spitting up so much. I thought it was acid reflux.

You can try keeping your baby in an upright position for a little while after she eats to keep the food down. She will be less likely to spit up when you lay her down.

  7. My daughter is 3 months and 3 weeks, after she was born she did great nursing and not spitting up much, but now she spits up constantly no matter if she burps a couple times or not, some days its fine but sometimes it seems like alot, she doesn't have trouble latching on unless she is super tired and is upset and crying. Its not throw up unless it projects out or is more then a couple ounce's, some babies spit up more than others, and babies normally know how to turn their head over when they spit up to get it out, but they also normally keep their head tilted to the side while asleep. If it worries you that much call and talk to her pediatrician, but they will probably tell you as i am telling you since my daughters pediatrician told me this.

  8. It sounds like a bit of reflux as baby's develop it and are not born with it... ask your local GP for advice..

  9. I would call her doctor

Check to see there is not a problem

My nephew was born with a whole in one of his intestines

    He needed a small operation

It could be as easy as being allergic to something your are eating
