    This is where salt on icy roads comes into play. The presence of the salt causes what is known as freezing point depression.

    That is, salt helps to lower the temperature at which water will freeze.

  3. Salt lowers the melting point of the ice. When this happens, if it's not too cold, the ice will melt. If it is too cold, but they are still spreading salt, they  could be using the rock salt like gravel of sand to increase traction.
