My two week old daughter wakes up at around midnight for her feed and then stays awake until about 1:30am every night, she is in a very bad mood and often whines and cries until she falls asleep. Is there anyway I can alter the time she wakes?

also she is breastfed but gets painful wind which I give her infacol for, is there anything I can do to reduce the amount of air she takes down with her milk?

thnx in advance x

  1. at 2 wks her sleeping pattern won't have emerged yet., she will eventually learn when it is night time and sleep for longer periods during this time. All you can do is make sure you keep it noisier and brighter  during the day and dark and quiet during the night so she learns the difference.  her sleep pattern won't be  established before 6 wks.

As for the wind problem, try to feed her more upright (i know this is difficult when b/feeding but is possible), and just burp well. if you swop sides, burp before the 2nd side feeding.  I think she may be too small for infacol,, and to be honest, i have been told that they don't work that well anyway,, best to have another solution.

  2. Bless she is only 2 weeks old, I'm not sure infracol will be a good idea it may be doing more harm than good. She shouldn't be getting wind really when you are feeding her at this age unless she is not latched on properly, maybe get your midwife to check when you feed her. When she wakes up don't put on strong lights and don't interact with her more than you need too, but welcome to the twilight zone of motherhood!

  3. I presume you give the infracol before she is fed.

I had the same problem, when they are so young, if its not sleeping at 1.30 am it will be 3.30 am, dont forget she is new to the world and trying to adjust.

I really found that If I stayed in dim light, then she went to sleep much easier, I bought a musical box from fisher price, it was wonderful, I played it during the feeds and then left it on when I put her back to sleep.

My daughter is now just over 2, the time flies. Enjoy even the tiring moments.

the very best of luck to you.

  4. hi I agree at 2 weeks old she shouldnt really be takin in much air if being breast fed and this sounds like she isnt latching onto ur breast properly so may actually not be getting fed enough of your milk! show your midwife how your putting the baby onto u and make sure you are doing it properly the only reason I am saying that is until last year when I had my baby son alfie I had breastfed all my kids in the past and wondered why they were alwasy crying I was shown properly for the first time ever how to breast feed and get my baby to latch onto me correctly something I hadnt been shown before! I had previously been starving my babies without realising it because no-one took the time of day to simply show me how to do it right!!! try that first and I hope that helps stick with breast feeding it really is better for baby x

  5. At this point, she is kind of on her own schedule.  You should start helping her differentiate between day and night, though.  Starting after her late evening feeding (around 10ish), put her to bed in her crib.  When she wakes to eat at night, keep the lights low - maybe a low wattage lamp or a nightlight can be on.  Don't talk to her or do anything to stimulate her.  Change her diaper quickly if she needs it.  Feed her and put her right back to sleep.  If she fusses, you can gently rock her, but don't talk to her or turn the lights on.  When morning comes and the day begins, then start talking to her, opening the shades, turning lights on, etc.  This will help her learn that nighttime is for sleeping and that it's boring to be awake at 1am.

You can't really change when she gets hungry at this point.  In the next few weeks, you can start getting her on a "schedule".  In other words, you can start making sure she eats every 2 - 3 hours.  By feeding her at regular intervals, you are helping her metabolism stabilize and you are also preparing her to be more scheduled later on.

To deal with the wind, you can look for some simethicone drops - Mylicon infant gas drops is one major brand.  You can put it in a bottle with her milk or feed her directly.  In the long run, you might try cutting back the dairy.  Try not drinking milk or eating yogurt, cheese, or ice cream for a week and see how that goes for her.  Also, make sure you are burping her between b*****s or in the middle of her bottle.

    Good luck!

  6. Have you made sure she is latching on properly? if she isn't then she will take in the air, and if you want to change her sleep pattern then you have to wake her when you want and try to get her to feed or change her nappy but it will take a few times before she gets used to it and she will try to fight you!

  7. My initial thought was to change her feed but as your breast feeding, I wouldn't recommend that.  Often the issue with breast fed babies is what your actually eating.  It passes through to the baby on the milk so you need to look at what your eating. Cabbage and things like onion will pass through and upset the baby so get some advice from your midwife.  Good luck.  I know how hard it is breast feeding and new babies can be very demanding.
