I have 2 year old twins, the boy of the group seem to have developed a very bloated belly, it is hard to the touch and his belly button is now protruding, he has has diahrrea for a while, and the dr did not seemed worried about the diarhea. I am starting to become concerned, at first I passed off his big belly as a baby belly, but my family, (mother, grandmother, etc) seem to be concerned that it may be more and deep inside I have always thought it might be also, but I am not the type of person to take the baby in for everything. It is to the point that it is hard for him to walk without sticking his belly out for ballance, and it is always large and hard It just doesn't seem right to me, any answers. I am thinking of taking him in but not sure.

  1. Time to call the doctor.  Trust that gift you have called mother's intuition.  If your gut is telling you that something just isn't right, well....you are probably correct!!  Get a second opinion, or even a third!  His little belly should not be sticking out that much!

  2. Ok i think that you need to call your pediatrician.  It could be nothing, but i would discuss over the phone with the nurse and let them know what is going on.  They will tell you what to do from there.

My friends baby did this also, i can't remember what it was, im sorry but he is fine now.  Just call the pediatrician, and they will let you know if he needs to be seen.  good luck!

  3. If you are concerned as well as your family, I would say you should take action.  If you are not satisfied with the advise of your pediatrician find one who will take care of your son the way he should.  Find another doctor.

  4. I would take him to a specialist, a pediatric gastrointestinal doctor and a pediatric allergist.  In the meantime I would try to give him some mylicon drops.  Frequently when the abdomen is distended, it is gas.  It is very uncomfortable.  It could be allergies also.  If the stool is very smelly and off color, try some lactaid milk.  Milk allergies are common, the protein molecules are large and hard to break down.

  5. It's not right... poor little guy.

My first thought was a food allergy.  Try an elimination diet with him.  I would eliminate gluten first (wheat, oats, barley, rye...  look up Celiac disease for more info).  If that doesn't work try dairy next.  You should see a change within 48 hours.  You can have him tested for Celiac disease if you so find he responds to a gluten-free diet.
