Question:

20/20s affect on 50 over ODIs?

We are seeing scores of 200 off 20 overs with only 3 or 4 wickets down. This would suggest scores of well in excess of 400 are very possibe in 50 overs. Can we expect to see teams scoring 400+ consitantly in ODIs?

Also will the free hit after no balls be introduced to ODIs? If so is this a good thing?

  1. It is slowly dragging up the scores in ODI's. It took about 35 years of ODI's, of which many were 60 overs not 50, to get a score of over 400. Within a short space of time, the amount of scores in excess of 400 has grown to 4 or 5.

I think the down side to 20/20, and to a lesser effect ODI's, is that it turns the game into a slog. Batsman have to be less technical and skillful and more powerful. Thats why it is important that the Test match is kept at the forefront of international cricket - it is after all the ultimate test for a player, hence the name.

I would like to see free hits in ODI's - it would mean that the bowler then does have to be more skillful and tactical - does he pitch it up and try and get it in the blockhole and risk full tossing the batsman and giving him 6. Does he keep it on a length where the batsman often has to manufacture a shot that isn't really on. Or does he bounce him, in an attempt to either make it hard for him to play it or entice him into a pull that he could mistime and although he wouldn't be out, keep the runs down.

  2. s it will affect ODI and free hit its not posible to allow in 50 over game bkas in 20 ovr ppl xpect entertainment but in 50 over its SKILL game.

  3. 20-20 has different field settings and different rules which allow many runs to be made. also bowlers only have 4 overs to take wickets...50 over ODIs have different rules, so that's why you see the runs are less

  4. 20/20s and ODIs are two different types of cricket. In 20/20 cricket u have to score a big score to defend but in ODIs cricket perticular skills, power is necessery. In most of the 20/20 matches it depends on luck but  ODIs r different.

Yes, free hit after no balls will b introduced in ODIs cricket. For example, a batsman feeling uneasy, can free his arm.

  5. much bigger scores, and sadly there will probaly be more sloggers.

  6. ya this would affect 50 over odi and you dont know that free hit is introduce in ODI after t20 world cup.

  7. yes we will see much bigger scores

  8. 20-20 is a game of different format,in only 20 overs you have to give a required target and so the score reaches 200.

50-50 is quite different & it becomes difficult to make a score of 400.

  9. Players will not be able to sustain the concentration frequently enough for us to see consistent 400+ scores in 5050s.

Yes free hits have been introduced and I asked this same question last week. Free hits introduced to 5050s 1st October 2007.

  10. I dont like the T/20 format at all. Before I left Ireland there was a lot of talk about it but nobody there was interested too much. I saw one match here v India & couldn't promise ill ever see one again. Give me ODI and test cricket.

  11. I can't see that happening in ODIs, & I don't think the free hit will be introduced either. 20/20 is a much shorter game & there isn't the rush to score in ODI like there is in it.
