20 sinkholes on a neighbors property???

My neighbor has around 20 sinkholes on her property and there is an opening down the road from her house behind a limestone quarry on the opposite side of the road from the sinkholes. Could this sinkhole be the entrance to take me to the cave under those sinkholes? These sinkholes are scattered about and are mainly clusters in a field below a wooded hill. If you walk up the hill and trough the woods you'll see more sinkholes but they appear to be scattered more but that could be because of all the brush that was laying around. There is however, a path that leads into the woods and as you walk it there are a few sinkholes here and there. All in all there probably scattered in an area of around 1 1/2 square miles. Do you think this is a large network of caves.

  1. Sinkholes are evidence of the collapse of underground caves.  In other words, the roof of the cave has fallen in and the sink hole represents the expression of that collapse at the ground surface.  Do not enter a sinkhole expecting to find a cave under it.  The cave is either completely gone or partially collapsed and very unstable.  Keep out of any sinkholes and associated underground "entrances".These features are very dangerous, highly unstable, and could collapse on top of you.

As far as this being an area of caves, it possibly still is.  Several caves may be left that have not collapsed.  Then again, depending on the number of sinkholes, all of the original caves may have already collapsed.  Yet, beware, as stated before, any of these caves will be highly dangerous and unstable.  Best to keep out, as the large number of sinkholes indicates that this is not a safe place to try spelunking.

  2. It's very possible, especially with an area suitable for quarrying limestone nearby.  As to whether or not you could actually enter any cave system that might exist, I would be very, VERY wary of even trying.  Caves can be dangerous, and sinkholes are caused by underground collapse... not really an area you want to be crawling around underground.
