  1. when you are swimming the 200 fly:

go 75% fast on the first 50

    80% on the next 50

    75% on the third 50

and go 100% all out on the last 50.

i use that method all the time when i swim the 200 fly and i never have too much left over of not enough energy to finish.

  2. All 200s have a similar pattern.

1st 50: Relaxed speed. Let your adrenaline and your body carry you through. You shouldn't really feel tired during this 50, but you might be as you reach the first wall.

2nd 50: Build your speed. Keep swimming with the relaxed feeling right off the wall, but start building up to a sprint so you're moving pretty fast by the second wall.

3rd 50: Do not hold back. Sprint your brains out.

4th 50: Sprint again. It should feel like you have nothing left on this 50, but just keep telling yourself to go faster.

If you've done a 200 correctly your splits will fall into a pattern of sorts. Your first 50 should be the fastest and the other three should all be about the same speed, two-four seconds slower than the first 50.

    For example: 29, 31, 31, 31.

On a 200 fly you need to hit a good rhythm during the first 50, one that will carry you through the whole race and one you'll be able to manipulate the speed of. Remembering to kick, especially on your breakouts will also help a lot.

  3. Breath 2-up/1-down the entire swim. That will help you keep you hips up.

Concentrate on long and loose the first 100. On this next swim, try to build up the last 50. (If that works, you can work on building the entire 2nd 100, but I'd leave that for the next time.)

The best thing for 200 fly (especially long course) is simply a little more experience. I have no doubt that your time will improve.
