200 to 1 victory at Wetherby for Maoi Chinn Tire
Maoi Chinn Tire raced Friday’s Weatherbys Bank Wensleydale Juvenile at Hurdle at Wetherby with the absurdly poor odds of 200-1, winning the race without breaking a figurative sweat.
The 13 horse listed-juvenile event was the first race for the horse while under the tutelage of trainer Jennie Candlish. Alan O’Keeffe rode the horse, lining him up with 3-1 Grandouet approaching the finale, after the horse had taken a ten-length lead. Maoi
Chinn Tire sauntered clear in the last two furlongs.
"No, I didn't expect that!" said Candlish. "Saying that, to be fair to the horse, he's done nothing wrong. As soon as we got him we sent him to Yogi Breisner to start him off on the right foot. Obviously, because he was a six and seven furlong horse on the
Flat, we wondered whether he'd stay the trip, but he's a very relaxed horse and that helped him."
Eight of Tire’s 12 opponents were former hurdle winners, including an entry from Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson’s yards, Domtaline. The pre-race favourite at 3-2 odds, he recently took an impressive 25-length win at Chepstow.
Maoi Chinn Tire was the long-shot at 200-1, with two other horses in the race at 100-1, and the other 10 riding at much higher odds. At the end of the race, the winner’s betting pool paid out a total of £912,000.
Maoi Chinn Tire finished an outstanding nine lengths ahead of Meetings Man, at 50-1, who was followed closely by Two Kisses at 9-1. Meetings Man’s impressive victory paid out a total of £3,616.20 from the betting pool. Rounding out the top-five were 12-1
Jubail and 3-1 Grandouet.
Tire, the Alan Baxter-owned winning gelding achieved a career-high official rating of 76 after the horse’s 21st time racing on the Flat.
