more than likely the bolt pattern will line up but there was quite a bit of difference between the valve & head gasket configurations between the two year models.  I would think you would need more than merely the cylinder to change out but likewise the head (uses 2 o-rings on the 2000 model but a head gasket on the 1997) and exhaust port valves...

not much between those two year models top end share the same part numbers...

yes, but you'll need a pipe from a 2000-2004 to fit the cylinder,

everything else will work: same head, same o-rings, same power valves, same piston/rings
