Question:

2001 Ford F150 engine problems?

My 2001 F150 (V8 4WD) is running rough and possible miss firing. It feels like the engine briefly stalls or missesin one or more of the cylinders while driving and slightly while idling in drive. I took it to the dealer to have it checked and (go figure) they couldn't reproduce the problem and just charged me $175 diagnostic test fee.

I've had no sensor lights or check engine lights come on. The engine turns over and starts immediately, but shortly after will start idling roughly like the RPM is dropping too low and almost stalling the engine. The engine surges a little and levels out and a few seconds later, repeats the process.

Same while driving. From a stop, it will stutter and have a hard time getting up to speed. Only way to get around it is to push the accelerator nearly to the floor.

Any suggestions?

  1. Maybe a vacuum leak from a loose or bad air hose.  Buy a can of carburetor spray and with the engine idling, spray various parts of the engine where hoses are.  The engine will speed up if you find a leak.
