Question:

2001 Toyota Avalon rear sub?

I just bought a 2001 toyota avalon, that has a jbl premium sound system. However, the rear center sub speaker is blown. I've read online that you need to replace with special type of sub, but is not an 8 inch sub, an 8 inch sub. What can I do, aside from purchasing a new one. I am already trying my own do it your self fix it method, not sure if it will work, basically trying to get a sound and solid seal across the flaky foam. I would like to purchase newer, and better sub, can I, please let me know.

  1. i had the speaker re coned for about $40.00. i live in houston, tx. check your local yellow pages for speaker reapir, they normaly repair big expensive home audio speakers but most shops can repair your sub

  2. You can use any 8 inch subwoofer to replace factory as long as you do not go below 3 ohm impedance.  My sub is blown in my 2000 avalon, I am currently running a JLAudio 12w7 in the trunk off of the factory amp with no issues.  If you are not familiar with the 12w7, it is a 1000 watt rms, 3 ohm subwoofer.  I am not suggesting this set up for you as it is absolutely overkill and useless as it adds minimal bass because the factory amp only pushes 25 watts to the sub and all the sound deadening material used in an Avalon (darn Toyota engineers ;)) Anyway, purchase a decent aftermarket 8 inch sub, put it in place of the factory sub and enjoy.  Most aftermarket subs are cheaper than the factory and you will most likely enjoy better sound quality.  I have a friend at work that has a Pioneer 8 inch in place of the factory sub, he claims it sounds better than it did before he blew the factory sub.

Good luck and I hope I have been of some help
