I have a 2001 ford escape xlt and today it sounded as my brakes were grinding metal on metal after 3 minutes the ABS light turned on and the brakes worked fine. Everytime I shut the vehicle off the ABS light goes out and the brakes grind and after 3 minutes it all repetes its self. does anyone know whar this could be?

  1. First off i am a certified Automotive Brake and suspension technician. You're brake pads are worn down to the point that metal is rubbing metal and you could have a serious problem that will cost a lot of money if you don't change your brake pads or have a certified technician change them for you.

  2. One or more of your ABS wheel speed exciter rings has likely cracked or broken. This is an extremely common thing to happen on Escapes lately, as they begin to age and accumulate mileage. When this happens, your ABS module "thinks" it is detecting a wheel spin event and activates the ABS hydraulic pump (hence the "grinding metal" noise), until it flags your ABS hard fault, which then illuminates the ABS light on, until you shut the engine down, resetting it. The part number for this part from Ford is 7L8Z-2C182-B for $20.57US. Expect to pay about 2 hours labour to replace per axle. Hope this helps.
