my neighbour has a 2001 kawasaki motorbike, I think it is at least 600cc. He runs his engine before he drives off and when he parks, regardless of the weather and I think he does this because it's fun for him. Am I wrong? Is there actually a technical need to do this?

  1. It's not good for any bike, to rev the engine right before turning off the engine.

When the engine is reved and the ignition is turned off, the pistons are still moving at great speed and sucking fuel into the engine.

Because the ignition is off, the spark plugs aren't igniting the fuel.

Raw fuel is being blown out of the exhaust port and collects in the exhaust pipe.

Upon start up, the excess fuel left in the combustion chamber will pre-ignite, putting extra force against the rising pistons, adding pre-mature ware to the rods and bearings.

The fuel left in the exhaust pipe will ignite, causing a backfire - once again, not good for the engine's internals.

  2. I think you mean he "revs" his engine. He DOES do it to be cool. There is no practical reason to revving the engine in this manner.

  3. actually, for starting yes..... especially for new bikes, you're supposed to warm them up 3-5 minutes before going anywhere.... and some bikes need a little extra throttle play to keep it running when cold....

i rev my engine when i park it too... i'm just making sure it's idling correctly before i shut it off... but it's not like i sit there for a minute or two doing it... it only takes a quick twist or two to get it reving up and then listen for when it comes back down (if my bike is idling incorrectly it'll die when going from high revs to low... thus i'm checking this)

  4. You are right, its only for his enjoyment and also for you too as long as you dont ever go over and say, "WHY DO YOU HAVE TO REV UP THA BIKE!!!!!!!?????? GO BUY A HARLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, this should teach him.

  5. its really, really difficult to drive off without the engine running, unless youre a rub and have the bike in the back of your truck
