2002 Audi A6 Quattro melted spark plug?

A spark plug melted and the engine seized. We're being told that to replace the engine in a 2002 Audi A6 Quattro will cost $9-10,000. The Blue Book value is nearly that much. Car is out of warranty because it has around 130,000 miles on it. We live in Cincinnati. Does anyone know if there's a recall on the engine?? Any ideas on how to salvage the car?

  1. hmmmm. not alot to go on. spark plugs do not melt 8-)

    a 2002 audi a6 burning nos, or a 2002 audi a6 "2.7t chipped, running trimmed k04 turbo's (or the like) might melt spark plugs. So unless your car is either, I'd start by looking for a new mechanic. A normally aspirated audi can not suck enough fuel to burn hot enough evn with a major intake leak.

    if you really need to replace the motor, $2k is a resonable number. problem is, it's pretty labor intensive (hey, it's not rocket science but audi's are just plain robust and it takes time and you know what they say about time)  book is probably 10 hrs (@$100 plus gaskets, hangers, nuts, bolts and anything else the mechanic thinks he can charge 2x $$ for....  sorry.

    <as mentioned above: find a new mechanic!>

  2. look for anengine from http://www.4usedaudiparts.com/ or from shokan auto they both specialize in used audi parts if you are not interested in fixing your car they may buy it for parts. i would not put a new engine in a car with 130K miles on it. try to get a usedo one from one of these places and have that put in.

  3. I have heard of no recalls . Check with a dealer and they can tell you if there has been any recalls If you want to salvage it, most if not all junkyards need a title for the car. Just look in the phone book for auto salvage or junkyards and call one most will pick it up and give you a few hundred dollars.Or you may tell a friend or two you have a blown up Audi and sell it for them to fix but you may also make someone mad in the end..Good luck.....ujn

  4. Look for an engine at some junk yards. My uncle bought a used engine at junk yard in eastern PA for about $400. It was at a junk yard called you pull it. I have seen you pull it junk yards on the internet at different places around the country.

  5. Sounds like they are charging you for a new engine and a ton of labor. See what your insurance will do since I assume you have full coverage.
