Question:

2002 Explorer XLT: Do I need a shift solenoid?

My transmission has been "hiccupping" for a while now. The gears don't slip or bounce, but there is a brief delay in shifting. When I am accelerating from a stop, there is a rattling noise. My Explorer also shakes like it’s going to fall apart when going uphill, and my tires etc. are in perfect shape. Recently, my O/D light started blinking and then locking. Now, I drive with the O/D off. However, my friend with similar problems just had the whole transmission blow and I want to do whatever I need to do to prevent replacing the entire transmission. Help?!

  1. Jacksonkak: Today's automotive transmissions are so complex that what you've described can be from a number of problems.

Usually shuddering up a hill is a sign that a clutch pack or band is slipping. While it could be that those parts are worn it could also mean that they are slipping because the OD solenoid is not engaging fully.  However, it could also mean that the actual solenoid pack or valve body is dirty and hanging up. Whatever the reason, if you let it continue to "rattle" or shudder it will let go on you. The fact that you have hesitation when accelerating leads me to believe that the problem is not exclusive to the O/D.  And if this "delay" your are talking about isn't a slip or a flare-up of rpm between gears then it also opens up the possibility that your engine could be in need to service causing problems with the electronics for the transmission.

You see, the problem can be any number of things.  I think that your model year was the year that Ford started to seal the transmission and not put a dipstick in them. So you would be forgiven for lack of maintenance if that's indeed the case.

You'll have to bring it to a qualified transmission shop. They'll have to road test it and most probably drop the pan to inspect it.
