My car runs ok at speeds under 40.When I try to accelerate into faster traffic (like off a ramp) it won't accelerate past 40mph unless I take my foot off the gas and tap the gas and then it will slowly gain speed.I can't get up a hill at more than 30mph,but once I've cleared the hill I can get back up to normal speeds, but very slowly.I had a diagnostic done at one of the auto parts places and was told it was the EGR,when replaced that still did not solve the problem. It's worse now and my engine light is on. I have not driven it since the check engine light came on.I would also like to know if a mechanic will come out and do a diagnostic, or will I have to get it towed to a shop. Please help,I don't want to end up taking it to someone just to get ripped off.I live in a rural area and I need my car.

  1. This may sound stupid, but when did you last tune the vehicle? Have you ever replaced the plug wires? The fuel filter is part of a good tune up and the air filter should be looked at as well. How many miles are on this vehicle? If at or over 100,000 miles and you have not replaced the plugs and wires with AC plugs and good quality wires, shame on you for neglecting your car. If you have a check eng light on, this is telling you to go and get it checked. The longer you put it off, the more likely it is to get worse.

  2. bad fuel pump, catalytic converter or airflow sensor. All require a shop to check.
