Question:

2002 Pontiac Sunfire - strange engine roar

I think this may tie in so I'll add it. Recently my stock muffler became loose on my 02 Sunfire and dropped a few inches down. Now the engine is making a low roaring sound at around 2000-2500 RPM and it gets worse once I pass 3,000 RPM, does this have anything to do with my muffler or is this something else entirely? Also it tends to struggle to go above 3000 RPM at higher speeds. Explanation?

  1. Sounds like you've a loose exhaust system and the system is leaking that would cause the roaring noises and cause the engine to loose compression and therefore loose it's gusto, plus the exhaust pipe might not be sitting flush bec it's alignment etc or you could have some a exhaust gasket that is fried or damaged.

I recommend you find a reliable exhaust shop to conduct a fre exhaust check and try to get a second opinion and also always try to have them show you and explain to you the fault and cause.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way what I might do is just  ask to get the exhaust checked for free bec you want to make sure the exhaust system is okay and if they spot the leak etc then see if they show you the exact problem and if they mention loss of compression that the engine would be loosening gusto.

  2. your catalytic converter is starting to plug, have the back pressure checked and replace the exhaust at the same time!
