2002 dodge neon auto transmission

Question

I have a 2002 Neon with a 4 speed auto trans. When the car is running a grinding/whirrling sound comes from the torque converter area. The sound will go away but the trans stops working completely. When the noise is there the trans works and shifts fine. Is the problem the torque converter or maybe the pump?

what i have ran in to on those is the cost to rebuild one for parts is more than i can buy a rebuilt one for ,especially one doing like yours is doing,anytime you hear noises from a transmission  like that its bad,it may take more to build that one than you can buy one for id say you,ll need a torque converter and possibly a new pump,all new bands and by the time you pay for all of this you can easily by a rebuilt one for it,they run around 12-1400 for a good one with a warranty on them,that would be the best option on this one,good luck.

Sounds like a pump issue to me. check out the allpar site and read the trouble shooting tips about the Transmissions, but I'm pretty sure the transmission needs a complete rebuild.

Yes, it likely need a Torque converter and pump, If it is not working now , a complete rebuild will likely be needed, or a remanufactured unit. Grinding or scraping noises coming from inside the unit are bad  signs, don't be surprised if the cost to repair is more than a reman unit.
