The car was stalling so I took it to my mechanic and they used some type of solvent to clean the throttle assembly. It seems to run a bit better but now when it idles in park it goes up and down from about 500 to 1500 rpms (I'm not sure if I've got these numbers right). My son now has it at college so it's hard to get it back in to the mechanic. Thanks ahead.

  1. Vacuum leak.  Something didn't get reconnected properly after the service and the intake is sucking in air somewhere after the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

This service will probably do nothing for your stalling problem BTW which in this particular car is typically caused by a fault in the Crankshaft Position Sensor.  There is a recall on this part.  Call your dealer service department and give them the VIN number. If your car is under the recall they will fix it for free.
