Question:

2003 Chevy Trailblazer 4x4 Transmission...?

I have owned my TB since new; it has 95,x*x miles now (very primarily hwy). It has had regular oil changes & services, had the tranny serviced last year. Friday after a little over 100 miles on interstate, I exited, and as soon as I let my foot off the accelerator, it started making noises (the kind of noise you hear when you have a standard tranny out of gear & hit the gas). I parked it overnight, and it seemed ok when I first started it up. It didn't take long to start making noises again when I let off the accelerator. I started home, stopped at a rest area about 50 miles into the trip. When I tried to leave, I put it in 'reverse', and it just made this horrible noise (like when you grind the clutch on a standard). I popped the hood, and about all the guys who were at the rest stop swarmed my truck, trying to figure out what the problem was. Fluids were ok, and I have no problems (maybe shifting a little slower than usual, but no other) in any other gear, just reverse. Since it's a holiday weekend, I obviously won't be able to get it in a shop until Tuesday.

So my question(s): What do you think the problem is? How much do you think it'll cost to fix it? And how long do you think it'll take to fix? Ok, and if anyone on here by chance lives around Fort Leonard Wood, MO, can you recommend anyone good?? Any help would be GREAT! Thanks in advance!

  1. your transfer case/rear end could be going out and grinding because of lack of fluid if a seal broke and it start to leak out once it heats up because of the expanding pressure. or it could be the front because you have a 4X4 and have not been engaging it enough to keep it all lubed up so the seals have dried and cracked. as for finding a shop i found my shop by just asking around BSing with people at the bars i found a privately owned one that had been in business for over 15 years, so look for a privately owned shop that has been around for a long time 10+ years they normally can't stay in business that long if they are bad to their customers

  2. Sorry for the bad news.

the noise the you're hearing is from the transmission, there's a part in the transmission called (reaction sun shell) this part is stripped or broke. that's the reason you don't have reverse you will also not have 2nd  & 4&th gears.

GM has updated the sun shell with one that's more robust.

unfortuanatly the only fix is to remove the transmission and repair it.

as far as price to fix, that's hard to say depending on wherther you want to replace just the broken part or overhaul the transmission given the fact that you have 100,000miles. I would get a few estimates from different transmission shops.

As far as time to fix, should be no more than 1 day.
