2003 Dodge Intrepid Shifting Problems

I own a 2003 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7L V6. It has been having shifting problems. Out of a cold start, the car will accelerate and shift normally however when you come to a stop the car will downshift into 2nd and gets stuck there until you put it in park, and restart the car. Then it shifts normally again. The check engine light is on with the code "Cam shaft position sensor" but I've replaced it 2 times with a new one and no dice.

  1. The shifting problem is not related to the cam shaft or the ECM warning.

Old cars do that a lot - they seem to loose transmission pump pressure on hard stops.  Your first course of action, obviously, is to add fluid.  Sometimes that doesn't fix it.  In those cases, I'm not sure exactly why they do that, but it's very common, and not just on Chryslers.

  2. It sure does sound like a comp is getting confused  or a trouble error signal and therefore causing the shifting issues and once you restart the engine you're resetting the comp and it then starts to work again.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way it does sound like the TCM=transmission module is going into a limp mode=or safe mode due to something like a speed sensor failer and that would only give you 2 emergency gears to run on iuntil it's reset.I highly recommend you get the transmission shop not just to give it a free test drive diagnose but also have them scan the system bec their equipment can scan the system while it's being driven and detect and indicate the cause if it's electronic device such as a speed sensor failer.Keep in mind that there is a input sensor and output sensor too.

  3. check the speed sensor it could be the problem and the transmission goes to 2nd for a safe mode and when you go to park it resets the part should run around 45 bucks and good luck

  4. the shifting problem isn't related any to the cam shaft sensor on that car,you need to take it and let a transmission shop test drive it they wont charge you nothing and get their opinion on it, its almost impossible these days to guess at the new transmissions they are more electrically controlled than the older ones was, this could be something as simple as the transmission control module going bad on it,but a shop will be able to tell you more about it,good luck.

  5. you need to check "transmission codes" when it goes into second and stays there this is called "limp mode" you will need to check this code before shutting vehicle off and as car is in this limp mode. you may erase when you shut off....usually its a input/output sensor problem, but if you have high mileage...get readt to rebuild!

  6. you may also be having a problem with your engine.  the 2.7 was terrible for it.
