Question:

2003 Ford Explorer dying?

We have a 2003 Ford Explorer, mileage around 124000. My husband was on his way home from work when it died on him a few times. It always started back up and he made it home. It dies like it's out of gas, but there's over half a tank. The gas gage is right cause we've only used around half a tank since we filled it up. My husband seems to think it's the fuel pump, my uncle thinks it's the fuel injectors. Do any of you guys have any suggestions on what might cause this and how to fix it?

  1. tell your husband to change the gas filter first, it might be clogging up.

  2. its the fuel injection because when the car's engine its not reciving gas is because the injection is not working well. you should check, if its not that check the fuel pump but i doubt it.

  3. sorry but it might be the battery/voltage regulator. don't laugh  Ford electronic fuel injections are fun about correct voltage. also might be fuel filter. could be the fuel pump. but check the battery and voltage reg batteries last about 5 -6 years 2003 to 2008 = 5 I would go there first unless you already replaced it

  4. have your husband do a fuel pressure test and compare it to the specs

  5. Have you ever had a tune up?  Or the fuel system checked?  It could be anything from a clogged fuel filter, to dirty injectors to worn out spark plugs. Sounds like it is not getting fuel from any of the examples I have given.

  6. FUEL PUMP, FUEL PUMP, FUEL PUMP!

I have encountered this problem several times and its always the fuel pump.  Try filling the tank completely full and it should go away, then when you hit about 3/4 full the problem start right back up again.

  7. check the fuel filter.. If it was the injectors it would be running alot rougher than normal after you start it.. and if it was the fuel pump after it dies you probably wwouldn't be able to start it.. check the filter may also have an air lock aswell.. so crack a fuel line at the engine and use the pump on the top of the filter and bleed all the air out of it...
