Question:

2004 Chevrolet Malibu Classic problems after overheating

After my 2004 Malibu Classic overheated, I checked inside the plug bores and the cylinders were clean. I drained the oil and it looked very good. So no blown head gasket. After that, I changed the oil and filter as well as the battery, but it will not start now. Is there some switch that the computer trips when this car overheats that prevents it from starting again without it being reset to prevent catastrophic damage? Thanks Paul

  1. It's likely time to dump it. AutoOnInfo.net's detailed reliability/durability studies suggest that a typical GM vehicle at 3 years of age is about as troublesome to own as a typical Toyota at about 19 years of age  and a typical Honda at about 26 years of age.

  2. Nope that would be a safety hazzard..Say if you where on a freeway etc and had to move you must be able to refire the car..Now think.... The car was running when you started working on it..Changing the oil non relevant... You pulled the plug wires... So if it won,t start you can,t have the firing order right..If you want to know how to get your firing order right that will cost you another question and 10 points for picking this as best answer....

  3. You might of affected the vehicles security features once you disconnected the battery for any real length of time.

First you might find out if the cylnders are getting gas, then do you have spark , then if the vehicle has the proper cranking amps required to turn over engine.Plus if the coolant leaked all over the vehicle it could be that certain sensors or electrical connectors etc got wet and are causing problems now.

If the car isn't turning over check the fuses one by one that are related to the ignition or starter or fuel pump relay etc.Plus if the car's security system is stopping it from starting there should be some kind of light or codes present.Be sure you check the belts and pulleys and try to find out if the engine will move manually.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I too change oil , oil filter , coolant and even transmission filter and fluids in cases like yours once the overheating fault is properly diagnosed , plus I highly recommend it too.

  4. well first when a car over heats you check the radiator and then the over flow jug.then you check for leaks.then you check the belt then you check the fan.you replace the thermostat .  not sure about a switch might be.. not sure why you check the plugs or drain the oil when you was having a coolant problem which neither of them would have much to do with over heating
