Question:

2004 Dodge Neon broke down?

Was driving on the Beltway when the battery light came on, then the engine light, then finally the car stopped running. Pulled it over to the side of the road and tried to start it but it didn't start. The starter didn't even turn over. Tried to jump start it and that didn't work. The battery seems fine, my lights and alarm still work. When the car shut off the engine didn't make any noise it just shut off. What do you think it might be?

  1. how many miles on the car?? sounds as if the timing belt broke! thus you get nothing.... just a dead car....

  2. you need to have a shop check it because the engine could have locked up in it or the timing belt could have broken, either way if the battery has power and nothing happens when you turn the key it has a serious problem, get a diagnoses form a shop on it they will be able to tell you exactly what it is,hopefully it wont be engine related, that can get really expensive on those cars to repair, good luck.

  3. Test your alternator, you want 13.4 to 14 volts DC.  See if belt is tight.  Also check battery voltage, 11.5 to 12 is normal.

Seems like an alternator failure, until test shows otherwise.

Or, perhaps a ground wire came off, clean and tighten battery terminals.

Remember, it is NOT the starter, because light came on.

  4. In this particularly model year, the wires that go form your positive battery node to your fusible box are bad pressed (wires and connector pressed) and can cause that the vehicle to mysteriously dead. Have this harness checked very closely because it is not noticeable at the first attempt
