Question:

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee clicking noise directly related to speed?

I hear an annoying clicking noise, coming from under the dash and behind the radio, that happens particularly when I decelerate. The frequency of the clicking Isa directly to the speed of the car. The noise sounds something like like a speedometer cable rubbing against something, but from what I've read there is no speedometer cable on Jeeps. This sound is driving me crazy. Anyone have an idea on what to do to solve this problem?

  1. i'm not an expert on Jeep Grand Cherokee if it doesn't have a speedo cable, what makes the speedo work?

I was just under a jeep Wrangler a few days ago and I did see a speedo cable coming from the tranny and the sound you describe sounds like a plastic tooth broke behind the speedo, that usually happens if you maxed out the speedo and it chips a tooth or 2 on the gear at the end of the cable.  Check under the car and see if there is a cable running from the trans to the dash board, if it is , thats your problem.

  2. You have probably figured it out already. Speedo cables often tick or click. It may need lube, or the gear either on the trans or the speedometer end may have chipped. You can disconnect the transmission end of the cable and drive the car, seeing if the noise stopps. If it does, it's the cable or the speedo. If it doesn't, it's none of the things I just mentioned. Then reconnect the trans end, disconnect the speedo end of the cable. If the noise is still there, it's the cable. If it stops, it's the speedometer head. You can check these in any order you want.

  3. possibly a mechanical odometer trip gauge. my 1995 does this occasionally, just hit the button and zero out....
