2004 Mazda3 Automatic seems to want to stay in 4th gear?

I just bought a used '04 Mazda3 Hatchback, it is automatic... while I'm driving and after having hit 4th gear, I let go of the gas to slow down and the digital gauge that tells me I'm still in 4th (but my far left gauge with the needle tells me I'm slowing down to 1st gear). So once the needle on my left gauge (the non-digital one) drops right at 1st gear the needle and the car jump up like it's supposed to being going faster.... any ideas? I don't know much about cars, and I can take it back to where I bought it because I have a 30 day warranty, I'd just like to go in there with an idea of what it is. Thanks in advance. :)

take it back, i don't think it is worth it if you are already having problems with the car... so far that's the only thing you have found, who knows what you'll find next
