2004 Pioneer 5.1 Home Theatre System & 1080i/p DVD player?

My 5.1 system has Digital Dolby & DTS feature for DVD playback, and S video output (no component O/P)

It has Optical and RCA inputs.

I have now gotton a 42" HD TV, and will get a upscaling to 1080i/p DVD player to connect to the TV. This player has DD/DTS decoding functions, and has Optical o/p.

Not connecting the player to the TV for audio.

Instead, I'm thinking of using a Optical cable to connect the DVD's Optical o/p to the 5.1's optical i/p for the surround audio.

Using this connection, will the 5.1 be able to receive the sound signals from the DVD player and reproduce as if the disc is being played from the 5.1 itself?

  1. Yes. In fact it's the best connection to use. You get 5.1 Dolby prologic from the receivers circuitry and a regular stereo input. Using the optical input will provide a better (cleaner) signal for the receiver to decode.
