2004 Toyota Corolla Electrical problem?

When I turn on the lights in my car, the backlight for the gear shifter (P R N D 2 L) sometimes will not come on until I tap at it firmly with my hand. Also, I get the same problem with a backlight that lights one of the control k***s on the HVAC system until I tap at it firmly then it comes on. What causes this and how can I fix it?

Sounds like a loose connection to the bulb that is used to illuminate or the socket that holds the bulb.  If you can get to the shifter bulb check that one out for looseness but I would suggest not messing with the HVAC on unless you are experience with auto repairs or do not mind buying new plastic trim and components.  Those can be a pain.
