2005 yamaha yzf450 ....what is a hot start?

i just purchased a 05 yamaha yzf450. what is the hot start lever for? how does it work? i have never used or even heard of this....hahaha

  1. Single cylinder 4 stroke dirt bikes with such high compression, require a leaner (more air) fuel mixture to start when the engine is hot.

    The hot start opens a circuit that lets more air into the fuel mixture.

    When the bike gets up to operating temperature - try to start it without the hot start choke - it's not easy.


  2. The hot start makes a small adjustment in the fuel flow when starting a hot/warm engine.  If  you've ridden the bike long/far enough for the engine to reach full operating temp, using the hot start lever will make it easier to start, in theory.

    That bike had a reputation for difficult starting.  You might check out some of the forums to see others say if you have engine starting issues.
