Question:

2006 Grand Prix and Anti Lock Brakes?

I bought a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix about 6 months ago and have noticed that it doesn't seem to have anti-lock brakes. I never thought to check when purchasing if this model featured anti-lock brakes because I figured that everything had them these days.

Is something just wrong with my vehicle or does the are there some builds of the 2006 Grand Prix which do not come with standard ABS brakes?

The only thing telling me that something is wrong is that my brakes lock when stopping in snow and ice. I can also lock them on asphalt, but thats a bit harder obviously. There are no error codes indicated.

Thanks alot.

  1. There were three trims available for 2006 - Base, GT and GXP.

ABS was standard on GT and GXP, optional on Base trim. Which is shocking and irresponsible. The car of that size and power should have had ABS as standard. Full stop.

Now, if you brake hard, or brake on ice, do you experience feeling like the brake pedal is kicking you? If the answer is yes, then you have the ABS.

There should be a dashboard ABS light. You should see it for a few seconds after you switch on the ignition (before starting the engine).

  2. Yes you should have ABS... it is now mandated, has been for a while.

Turn the key in your car to "On" but do not start it... watch the dash lights, they should all cycle through a diagnostic and light up... check to see if an ABS light comes on.

If it does and goes out... your ABS is active

If it does not... the ABS may be inactive, and I have seen people pull the actual bulb out so the light was not on... which you wont know the ABS is out, cause no trouble light... get it checked.

  3. Well it states that your vehicles ABS was an option and no you cannot add it.
