Question:

2006 Hyundai Sonata fuel gauge problems?

I'm having a problem and not that familiar with Hyundai vehicles...I know it uses drive-by-wire for acceleration and I know it "zeros" all the gauges when you take the key out...another thing I'm not familiar with - all the cars I've driven before the gas/temp gauges would read correctly with or without the key.

So here's the problem:

When it's filled up, the gauge reads about 2/3 of a tank even though the pump says it's full (I actually went back to the gas station thinking the pump shut off early but could only add less-than one gallon)...what possabilities are there? The sender? The instrument panel? Some strange little-known computer between them?

Still waiting for the dealer to call back, I called this morning right after they opened but nobody would answer the phones...

  1. I had this problem and took to the dealer on 8/07/08, they replacen the in tank fuel sender unit. works fine know showing ful and the ramge miles correct based on miles per gallon used.

  2. 2006... it's under warranty so who cares what the problem is... take it in and get it repaired.

  3. my 99 s 10 chevy has same prob..gauge reads 1/2 to 3/4 even when full or empty...new sending unit is 300 dollars [its part of fuel pump] and gas tank must b dropped to replace...so i use odometer...reset it at fillup and fill up ever 200/225 miles.

  4. The float inside the fuel tank has some obstuction when it is 2/3rd full.I think the plastic rod of the float would need to be replaced. Not much of a job in fact.
