2008 Hyundai Elantra, ignition and wheel locked?

I bought a brand new 2008 Hyundai Elantra in January. I drove my car this morning with no problem. I've been home for awhile and a minute ago, I got in my car to go to the store. The key goes into the ignition with no problem, but the key wont turn. It seems to be locked. The steering wheel is also locked and wont turn but maybe an inch in either direction. The car is in park and I jiggled the gear shift to ensure it was all the way in park (it has automatic transmission). I dont know what to do! I have AAA and can call them if necessary but I dont want to have the car towed etc if it's not necessary. What is this? What can I do to fix it?

  1. Have you tried pulling the wheel to either side while you are trying to turn the key?

  2. Your car is still under warranty so call your local dealer and tell them your situation. most of the time dealers are very willing to work with their customers. sorry i couldn't just pinpoint what was wrong but thats the best thing that comes to mind.

  3. I agree with first answer jiggle the steering wheel while simultaneously turning your key in the ignition. The last time you drove the car you must have turned the steering wheel after removing your key maybe to help yourself out of the car. I believe all cars will lock the steering and ignition when this occurs.
