2008 Malibu winner Bob Black Jack will meet the 2009 Malibu winner M One Rifle in the California Cup Sprint
The 6-year-old James M. Kasparoff trained Bob Black Jack is coming off an emphatic grade 2 win and now is pointed toward the $100,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint which is to be held at Santa Anita Park on 29 October, 2011.
The son of Stormy Jack, out of Molly’s Prospector by Native Prospector, Bob Black Jack came back to the races after three years absence and the last race he ran in was the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes.
The Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita is one of America’s most prestigious sprint race, and Bob Black Jack managed to win it in way back in 2008 over synthetic surface, under jockey David Flores on 26 December, 2011, over at seven furlongs.
He managed to defeat Into Mischief and Georgie Boy, who finished second and third, respectively, and covered the distance in 1 minute and 20.20 seconds.
Jeff Harmon, James Kasparoff, who also trains the sprinter and Gerardo A. Salas owned Bob Black Jack marked his return to the races with a win in the Grade 2 San Carlos over at seven furlongs on 20 February, 2011, at Santa Anita Park under jockey David Flores.
This time around Bob Black Jack defeated Ventana and Supreme Summit to conquer the pack, with the winning time of1 minute and 21.05 seconds.
The California Cup Sprint has also reeled in the 2009 winner of the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes, M One Rifle, who is also a pretty good sprinter on the front end.
Like Bob Black Jack, M One Rifle is also coming off a layoff, but Bob Black Jack’s layoff was an extensive one, but on the other hand M One Rifle hasn’t raced since 2 July, 2011. The last race the sprinter entered was the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap at
Hollywood Park where he finished seventh.
The reason why Bob Black Jack as off racing because he had a suspensory injury in the workout after winning the San Carlos, and he was never retired.
His connections gave him an extensive break which provided him the time to recover at his own pace.
