This is a toughy, as the women's field has been wide open lately, particularly with injuries and the lack of a real dominator on the Wtatour.

*my prediction

#1 ANA IVANOVIC: because of her thumb injury and lack of matches I think she will falter early.

   *4R/ Earlier

#2 JELENA JANKOVIC: Jelena's year has been solid but not outstanding. While I am rooting for her to win her first big one, I think her performance at the Open will reflect her somewhat lackluster year . She may have a tough match against Zvonareva in the QF and I can't really see her getting past Dementieva in the SF or the winner of the top half of the draw.

KUZNETSOVA: Sveta has had a decent year, but has struggled, particularly as of late (lost in first round to Li Na at Olympics). A hampering injury and lack of confidence may do her in earlier than her results in the past at the Open would project.

S. WILLIAMS: I think Serena is due for a Grand Slam! However she has had inconsistent results at the majors this year. If (big question mark) she is healthy, confident and stays focused I think she will win. However she is stuck in the tougher half of the draw and would have to get past Venus who beat her at Wimbledon, possibly Safina, who beat her in Berlin (though on clay), and than the finalist on the other half (I'm guessing Dementieva who beat Serena at the Olympics). Also Serena tends to perform when everyone has written her off, this is not exactly the case. Sometimes Serena lets her emotions and desire overtake her focus and she gets a bit pouty and goes away. If she gets to the finals I see her taking the title.

DEMENTIEVA: best year to date - winning Olympics. She has had her best results at US Open and while she is the perpetual dark horse I think she could win, if not get far.

SAFINA: the hottest player on the tour since at the moment. She has improved tremedously and I expect her to get far, but maybe run out of gas by the end, as her summer schedule has been demanding.

V. WILLIAMS: perhaps the most unpredictable player on the WTA Tour. The years she has won Wimbledon she has done well at the US Open (2000/2001 winning Wimbledon and US Open, 2005 losing in QF to Clijsters who is no longer playing, 2007 losing to Henin, also no longer playing). Her game suits the hard surface, but I think

she may lack match toughness and a bit of desire after winning Wimbledon. Also a potential match up with Serena could swap the results from Wimbledon.

The top 4 players I would bet on are: the Williams sisters, Dementieva and Safina. If Dementieva plays Safina in the final I see Dementieva as the victor. If Serena or maybe Venus faces Dementieva in the final or anyone else I think they will win.

Ultimately I think Dementieva will win the title against Safina, a repeat from the Olympics. I hoping Serena or Venus comes through in which case I believe they would beat the other finalist, but something tells me they may lack a bit of match toughness and perhaps a tad of confidence, in Serena's case.

In the women's singles, I'm predicting these players to do well:

The William sisters - They're playing SO well, they won the doubles gold and its their home Slam!

Dinara Safina - She's in super form, and she'll go really far in the US Open.

Ana Ivanovic - She's the world number one, and she's definitely do great this year!

Jelena Jankovic - I love her game! She's one of the contenders for sure.

Elena Dementieva - She's the Olympic gold winner. She has a great chance.

I believe that She will win US Open and become world Number 1...

Ivanovic n Jankovic are both Injured so they won't win this...
