2008 WIMBLEDON: congrats VENUS, but did she DESERVE the win?

First of all congrats to Venus

Her win over sister Serena secured an unbelievable 7th Williams Wimbledon title in 9 tournaments

And thats simply superb

With all the highest respect to Venus, her path to the championships has been rather easy

To start with, the top four seeds (1 Ana Ivanovic, 2 Jelena Jankovic, 3 Maria Sharapova & 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova) had all fallen within the first four rounds

Surely it would have been more harded for Venus had she met any of those four girls

Also she did not encounter a seeded player until the semifinal (5 Elena Dementieva)

The final was rather like a family outing

The question

DID VENUS DESERVE THE WIN?

for love of God, please write reason why

  1. Yes, she deserved to win. Apart from the first 15 minutes, Venus dominated the court. As John McEnroe said in commentary : "For the first time in a Venus/Serena match, I sensed Venus wanted it more". What else is there to say?

  2. A RESOUNDING YES.

    VENUS DESERVED TO WIN.

AND SERENA DESERVED TO BE THERE TOO.

I don't know why people say that they had an easy path to get there.

Venus and Serena were given the same opportunity as each and every person there.

But they were the last two standing.

It's not their fault that Maria Sharapova got taken out.  It's not their fault that all the other seeds got taken out.

And it's definitely not their faults that there are a lot of paper champions.  You know the type.  They play a lot of tennis and that's why they're in the top ten.

Venus and Serena EARNED the right to be in the ladies finals and the ladies doubles.

  3. Yes she did! Her game just comes alive on the grass courts and even if the top 4 seeds had not fallen so quickly I still believe that Venus would have beaten them, had she gotten the chance to play them.

And gosh... last year she was seeded 23rd and had to play Sharapova in the 4th, Kuznetsova in the Quarters, and Ivanovic in the Semis, and she beat them easily in straight sets. I would say given the big opponents she had to play last year to win the title, this year she deserved to have a little bit of luck in the draw.

  4. well before the final i said Im sure venus will win but at the start of the match it looked like serena was playing the better tennis..

I dont know what happened her....she is deffinently stronger..

Did you see when she let venus have a point lol...

Antway I wanted venus to win because everyone was shooting her down..=)

  5. Yeah she deserved it, she was the superior sister today...

  6. yea she deserved it. its not like she was just handed the trophy. she wona ll her matches it doesnt matter who she play she beat them

  7. Yes she deserved it.  She seemed more determined to win and she did.

  8. I'm going to put it like this:

Venus has a 4-1 head to head record over Ana Ivanovic (including a 6-2; 6-4 win over her last year at Wimbledon)

She has only has a 4-3 record over Jelena Jankovic (including a loss at Wimbledon in 2006). But most of Jankovic's victory's over Venus have come on clay and Venus usually wins on the faster surfaces.

Svetlana Kuznetsova has the winning head to head record of 4-3 over Venus, but their one meeting on grass (last years Wimbledon) was dominated by Venus on her way to the title.

Sharapova leads Venus head to head 2 to 3. But the two times Venus has beaten her have both been at Wimbledon in straight sets.

The point I'm trying to make here is that with the form that Venus showed in all of her matches here, I honestly don't any of those players would have been able to beat her this year on this surface. Yes, it would have been harder for her and she might have dropped a set or two along the way, but I think she still would have reached the final. And let's not forget that Serena also won 3 titles this years (including a victory over Venus) and was arguably playing the best tennis of anyone in the draw and Venus still beat her in straight sets. So yes, Venus deserved to win without a doubt.

  9. Yeah, if she was good enough to be all the other players of course she deserved to win.

  10. Yes, she certainly deserved to win.  Yes, you could say that some of her opponents were not top quality.  But it certainly wasn't VENUS'S fault that Sharapova and Ivanovic lost to players that were ranked over 100th in the world.   She had no control over the other upsets of top ten players either. Venus can't be penalized for them s******g up, since she could have been upset just as easily by those same type of players.  Her new title doesn't mean less because Venus actually did her JOB as a top-ranked player while others got caught slipping.  And her opponent in the finals was no slouch by the way.  It was a hard fought, well-earned victory for Venus today.  Kudos to her on her 5th Wimbledon.

  11. Yes she did deserve to win it because she beat everyone she was supposed to beat. She won all of her matches, including the final, and no one can take that away from her. If the Dolphins win the Superbowl next year, will they deserve it because they played the worst teams? Of course.

  12. Well if all 4 top seeds  had fallen in the early rounds then how good where they really. Venus didn't seem to have any trouble beating  Tamarine Tanasugarn and Serena beat Zhe Zeng in two sets.

Ana Ivanovic go work on your hair , make up and looking pretty.

Maria Sharapova go walk your dog.

    Kuznetsova surely you jest.

It will be the same results come US OPEN time the Williams' sisters will make short work of the competition as the other girls are weak I tell you weak.

  13. Yes she deserve it,

She can outwit , outplay and outlast all the seeded player actually..

She has the strongest serve in women division, the strongest opponent of her is Justine Henin-Hardenne and Serena only..

This is only my opinion though..

  14. Of course she did. Look at last year, she defeated soo many good players to win it. It doesn't matter who she plays on this surface, if she's on top form, no one can beat her. Of course she deserved this win. Serena is better than any other players on tour right now, also has the most major titles on tour right now, can't beat anyone better. This was one of their best matches, wish it was longer.

  15. Yes she did.

And those top seeded players would have lost to Venus anyway.

Last year Venus beat Maria Sharpova at Wimbledon.

So it isn't like she would have lost to them.

The top seeded players all lost to lower seeds so what does that say about them?
