i have a new nightster, came with gray motor.the black motor i wanted harley wont install in the nightster, not even special order(NOT SURE WHY NOT?).assuming i found someone with a 1200R with the blacked out motor, how much of a job is it to swap motors in a new fuel injected sportster? as far as i know the motors are identical except for the coating.i have basic hand tools and was a tech in a auto repair shop for years, but ive never worked on a bike.local harley dealer service manager doesnt seem to want to mess with it.any advice greatly appreciated!

where could i find a low miles 1200R motor?

thanks in advance!

  1. I have no idea where you would find the engine you wanted and I can't believe your local Harley dealer won't get you the engine you want. The swap out would take you only part of a day as long as nothing was broken during the exchange. The engines these days, being mono units, only require a few items to be disconnected before the actual hardware that holds the engine in place needs to be removed. Gas tank. Seat. Pipes. Foot pegs. Gas line. Oil line. Wires. Drive chain (or belt if a belt drive model) and you should be about done. I ride a 05 Heritage Softail with a 88 in engine and have been talking to Harley of Tucson here about a 110 in engine and the swap. They said it's a t*t for tat swap and ya spend more time getting to the engine than anything thing else. Hope you find your engine.

  2. they are the same and will swap... but the vins won't match and your title will be all screwed up
