  1. no. digital meaning that people with antennas still on their tv's.. ( god knows who still has that) they will have to switch to their local provider with a box.  Like comcast, optimum, tivo, stuff like that

  2. No.  HD and Digital are two different things.

First HD is a type of digital signal (wide screen with either 720 or 1080 lines).  SD (squarish screen with 480 lines) is also digital.

Second, the "switch" to which you refer only affects free Over The Air (OTA) TV that one would receive with an antenna.  Antenna TV users will need to have either a Digital TV or a converter box for their old style analog TVs.  Cable and satellite users will not have to make a change.

So, if you have an antenna and a HD set, you can watch HD content when it's broadcast.  Not all programs are in HD yet.

If you have cable and a HD set, you could probably get some HD content without a box, however you would need the box for Pay Per View and other conditional access services.

If you have satellite, you would need the HD satellite box.

I hope this helps. Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

  3. dtv.gov

^^all the information on the switch^^

  4.     If you have an HDTV with the new digital tuner (as almost all HDTVs do now) you obviously won't need a serarate HD box. But an HD broadcast will be left up to the broadcaster. Let's say that a certain digital HD channel is broadcasting a program in non HD. That program won't be true HD, but it will still look much better than the old analog TV ever did.
