2010/2011 season summary – Barcelona (Part 3)
As January continued, Barcelona managed to record their first defeat in 29 matches. The 28 match unbeaten streak ended against Real Betis who won the Copa Del Rey quarter final second leg against the Spanish Champions. Barcelona still managed to qualify
for the next round as they won the home fixture 5-0.
With January about to end, Barcelona managed to record most consecutive wins in the Spanish La Liga – 15. The record was first set by the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 rivals Real Madrid.
February started and on 2nd February, both Real Madrid and Barcelona managed to qualify for the final match of the Copa Del Rey. Barcelona won their semi final against Almeria as 8-0 on aggregate. On the other hand, Real Madrid won their semi
final against Sevilla after winning 3-0 on aggregate.
The final match between Barcelona and Real Madrid was going to be for the first time in 21 years as both the teams faced each other in the Copa Del Rey final back in 1990. Barcelona won the last time the two faced in the final of the Copa Del Rey as they
scored two goals in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863’s home stadium – Mestalla.
On 5th February 2011, Barcelona managed to record the 16th consecutive league win which meant that they managed to beat the previous record of 15 consecutive league wins set by Real Madrid. The match they won was against Atletico Madrid

With March starting, Barcelona were to face a tough opponent – Valencia. The Catalans won the match with only a single goal with Lionel Messi scoring after a wonderful assist from the former Sevilla player http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Adriano-c3773. With the goal, Messi managed to take his
goal scoring tally to 27 in the Spanish La Liga.
On 8th March, the Spanish Champions had to face http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 in the return leg of the UEFA Champions League. Barcelona lost the first leg 2-1 away from home despite dominating most of the game.
The second leg finished with Barcelona winning 3-1 at the Nou Camp. Lionel Messi scored two goals with one goal coming from a penalty kick. Barcelona dominated throughout the game and Arsenal did not take a single shot on target. A goal was scored in Arsenal’s
favour but it was actually the Barcelona centre back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-Busquets-c33048 who scored an own goal.
On 15th March 2011, it was announced by the Barcelona medical staff that the French full back Eric Abidal was suffering from a tumour in his liver. It was decided by the medics that he would be treated in the same week.
The Frenchman received a lot of support around the globe. The Real Madrid players and the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 decided to wear shirts before the game which read “Animo Abidal” which means “Strength Abidal” in English.
With Eric Abidal missing out due to a tumour in his liver, Andreu Fontas was promoted to the first team while http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javier-Mascherano-c18071 was then tested in the centre back role.
